‘My Life Was Changed at Heidelberg’

Ken Block

Gifts to Heidelberg change lives. I know this because my life was changed at Heidelberg when my education was made possible, in part, by scholarship donations from previous graduates. For this reason, I want to help current and future Heidelberg students.

For several years, I routinely sent a modest annual gift to Heidelberg. Then a few years ago, I learned about the HU charitable gift annuity (CGA), the “gift that gives back.” In return for a gift of at least $25,000, Heidelberg provides a fixed income for life at a rate that is substantially better than what a CD pays and part of those annual payments are income tax-free. I elected to fund the CGA with appreciated securities and not only did I save on upfront capital gains tax, but I also received an income tax charitable deduction at the time of the gift. Most importantly, I’m confident in knowing that Heidelberg will be good stewards of the remaining funds in my CGA and will use these dollars as I’ve directed.

Then, after attending our 50th class reunion and seeing significant changes to the HU campus, I decided to increase my annual gift. The university’s need for unrestricted annual gifts is real. Unrestricted gifts give Heidelberg the flexibility to pivot and use these dollars for critical needs.

I’m invested in the current and future success of HU to help launch students on successful paths. I am hopeful that my gifts will create a ripple effect as these young men and women venture out into the world and share their talents. Please join me in this effort to help make a difference in the life of students at Heidelberg.
