My four years at Heidelberg in the late 1960s was, for me, a period of enormous personal growth in a time of tumultuous change in American higher education and society. On that campus, I learned table manners in the co-ed dining hall, stretched my mind with new ideas and ways of thinking in the classrooms, and endured typical bouts of adolescent angst.

While the academics were important, Heidelberg encouraged me to pursue my passion for social justice, my interest in journalism and opportunities for leadership. I later had a long career on the staff of The Ohio State University.

I've been privileged to experience the wonderful diversity of American higher education where the goal should be for every student to find a college with the right environment and support for them. I believe for many students that college could be Heidelberg.

My wife, Karen, and I hope through planned giving that our support for Heidelberg will provide financial aid to first-generation college students to define their dreams and discover their paths to achievement.

Like Steve and Karen, you, too, can make a meaningful impact on Heidelberg by making a gift to us in your will or other estate plan. Contact Doug Kellar at dkellar@heidelberg.edu or 419-448-2888 to begin a conversation.
